History & History-related items
Like a lot of towns in Northern Minnesota, Bigfork was created by loggers fur traders and trappers. its largest boom was due to the major logging done in the early 20th century. This includes the CC camps of the Roosevelt Era and local mills, including Rajala Mill Co. and Potlach, just to name a few who helped develop this area. More recently, it has been somewhat of a hub for Tourism activities due to the many lakes and lodges in the area. Fishing in the summer is the main attraction - Hunting in the Fall - Snowmobiling in the winter - And a breathtaking natural beauty in the spring. The last 30 years has shown a stady increase in this industry.

Bigfork High School is located on the Rice River, near the fork from the Bigfork River in which the town gets its name. its student population grades K-12 is approximately 300-400. In all it has somewhat limited resources due to its location and being a Satellite School to the headquarters in Grand Rapids, MN. However, due to grants and funding, the High School has been rebuilt due to structural problems associated with its age. It has been fitted with more modern fixtures, a new football field and a new Gym. As well, philanthropic contributions have helped with equipment purchases and general budget concerns recently. They have a computer lab with internet access and Fiber Optic learning assistance. Despite being isolated by geography, BHS has a very up to date educational system in most respects.
