The first settlers in Fairmont were E. Banks Hall and William H. Budd in June of 1857. Lakes there still bear the names of these men. It was named for the rolling hills which surround the nearby lakes.
Fort Fairmont established in 1862 soon after the Dakotah Indian uprisings.

There is a chain of 5 lakes near the Iowa border. Four of these lakes are connected by channels and each lake is stocked for fishing.
