History & History Related Items Gilbert history: Here is a history page for Gilbert. Mining began in this area about 1892. The community was first called Sparta in 1896. It had to move because of the mining. So at that time, the name became Gilbert after the Gilbert mine nearby. Sparta also remains as a smaller town between Eveleth and Gilbert. Gilbert was first incorporated in 1908, but when challenged by mine owners, the courts upheld the protest and the incorporation was rescinded. It was later incorporated in 1909 for good Gilbert attractions: Gilbert, Minnesota - official website. Lake Ore-Be-Gone - a huge mine pit lake spanning over 140 acres! A great place for water skiers, fishermen and swimmers, Ore-Be-Gone is the result of the natural flooding of three iron ore mines: the Gilbert, The Schley and the Pettit.
