In 1856 Joe Hammons settles near the southernmost bend in the Zumbro River, Wabasha County Minnesota. The valley and most of the land comprising Hammond came into his possession. He built a house of logs, and moved his family in and opened a store. Grading on the railroad started on 1877 and was opened for traffic in 1878. At this time buildings started in earnest in Hammond. Hammond at one time boasted 3 grocery stores, 2 hardware stores, a creamery, 2 blacksmiths, 2 harness makers, 2 hotels (known as the Hammond House and the West Hotel), 3 salons, a doctor, a dentist, a milliner shop, 2 barbers, a watchmaker, a sawmill, a post office, a lumber yard, a railroad station, 2 ice cream parlors, an opera house, a movie theater, a standard oil bulk station, a two room elementary school, and a wagon maker.
