This area was first known as Tall grass Prairie. The area was covered as
far as the eye could see with 6-8- foot grass. The Dakotah Indian
legend in this area says that Pipestone is where the tribe originated
and that the stone was colored by the blood of their ancestors.

This monument comprises 283 acres and presents the pipestone quarries
where the red stone was found which the Indians used to make their
ceremonial pipes. Other Indian legends abound and may be heard here.
