History & History Related Items Alton history: Here is a good history page for Alton. When Oregon County was split in 1859, the county seat, Thomasville, was not near the center of the newly re-aligned county of Oregon. Thus, Alton was designated the new county seat, being located nearer to the center of the county. The new courthouse was one of only a few buildings when it was opened in 1860.
