Bolivar grew up along the Overland Stage trail. Keeling Spring, now marked by a monument, has always been an important landmark in the city. It was named for a town in Tennessee which was named for Simon Bolivar, the famous South American general.

Attractions
There is much recreation in and around Bolivar with fishing and hunting. It is also a center for manufacturing and commerce. While expanding and growing, Bolivar has also maintained its friendliness and its strong family values.
Bolivar is home to the main campus of Southwest Baptist University, which was founded in 1878. SBU has over 3600 students, including nearly 900 graduate students.
