history for Commerce, plus lots of other good information!
Originally, in 1790, the village was called Zewapeta. In 1797, a town was formed there when William Smith received a land grant. The name was changed to Tywappity Bottoms at this time. It was officially mapped as a town and incorporated in July of 1834. It became a favorite stopping point for the steamboats coming up and down the river because of the plentiful wood and help they received whenever they stopped.
