History & History Related Items Jefferson City history: The City was established on December 31, 1821 and was originally laid out by Major Elias Bancroft and Daniel M. Boone, son of the famous pioneer. It has the distinction of being located on land donated by the federal government for establishment of a state capital City. Many of the early settlers were friends of Thomas Jefferson and lived near him at Monticello in Virginia before coming to this area. The city was named for Jefferson.
