The La Plata Public Library was founded in 1939, by a civic group of women called Atalpal. The Library has prospered and now houses over 30,000 volumes. We are located at 103 E. Moore, on the north side of the square in La Plata.
La Plata is the home of Lester Dent, author of the 1930's pulp fiction books called "Doc Savage". The Library houses a large collection of these books. Lester Dent's home is on the National Register of Historic Homes. There are two other homes in this town of 1,428 people on the National Register, one being the Gilbreath-McLorn House and the other the Doneghy House.
The LaPlata Public Library holds an extensive collection of genealogy resources for La Plata and Macon County, MO. These include obituaries, over 200 cemetery listings, census records, marriage records and the LaPlata Home Press 1876-1998 on microfilm.
