Historical and genealogical information about Madison The county was settled starting in the late 1700's. Many people were farmers who came from Kentucky in the 1810-1850 time frame. Mark Twain Lake Opened in 1983, this 18,600 acre reservoir lake is located just east of Madison. It has 285 miles of shoreline and supports much outdoor recreation of all types. The lake was built around the village of Florida, the birthplace of Samuel Clemens, later known as Mark Twain.
