Historical and genealogical information about Monroe City The county was settled starting in the late 1700's. Many people were farmers who came from Kentucky in the 1810-1850 time frame. Attractions

Mark Twain Lake Opened in 1983, this 18,600 acre reservoir lake is located near Monroe City. It has 285 miles of shoreline and supports much outdoor recreation of all types. The lake was built around the village of Florida, the birthplace of Samuel Clemens, later known as Mark Twain.

Annual events in the area are the American Celebration on Armed Forces Day in May, The Mark Twain Lake Rodeo which is held during the 4th of July weekend; and Missouri Mule Days, which is held the first Saturday in October
