Monroe City attractions: Mark Twain Lake Opened in 1983, this 18,600 acre reservoir lake is located near Monroe City. It has 285 miles of shoreline and supports much outdoor recreation of all types. The lake was built around the village of Florida, the birthplace of Samuel Clemens, later known as Mark Twain.
