In 1840, a small settlement became known as Sylvania. This small community, then set in a dense woodland, thus became known as Oran. The name was changed from Sylvania to Oran because Missouri already had another town by the name of Sylvania. Oran was chosen because a returned sea captain, Ward L. Smith, hads spent time in Oran, Algeria, during the Crimean War. In 1887 Oran had a population of 417 and only four businesses. In 2002, Oran has a new school not even 10 years old, Population of over 2000, and now has over 20 businesses.
