Valley Park Historical Events
1894, January 17Site of 1st Lynching in St. Louis County
John Buckner, a black laborer and ex-convict from Vandover Rd., was publicly hanged at about 5 am from the Old Wagon Bridge in Valley Park on the night of January 17, 1894--after being taken by a mob of about 100 Valley Park citizens from Clayton and Manchester Law enforcement. This first lynching in St. Louis County was over the rape and assault of a Black resident and the attempted rape of a teenage white resident. There was no investigation of his death, and the Saint Louis Coroner's office labeled his death a suicide.
To this day, there is no mention of this incident in traditional histories of the city, nor is there any record of this event at Valley Park's City Hall or Library. The bridge was swept away in November 1915 during one of the worst floods Valley Park had ever seen. The site is now approx. 25 yrd's west of Hwy. 141.
