History:

Franklin County was created in 1818 when it was broken off from Saint Louis County. The first county seat was the village of Newport, but the community doesn't exist anymore. Newport was also called Campbellton in 1854 and Dundee in 1857. It served as Franklin's county seat from the date of organization in 1818 until 1826. Resident of the county wanted a more convenient site for the county seat and petitioned for a change to Union. The change was approved in 1825, but the court was held in Newport until the new courthouse could be completed. A temporary structure for the offices was used in Union until November 1828 when the new courthouse was completed.
