The name "Chunky" is from a Choctaw Indian game played with a round disc and sticks. It is a game of skill and accuracy that requires a large, flat playing surface or field. According to Mr. Jesse Ben of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, this area was called Chunky because the river's sand bank provided the best playing area for the game. The nearest English spelling of the Choctaw word is "Chanki" (pronounced Chunky).
