Columbus is situated at the juncture of three rivers: the Tombigbee, The Buttahatchie, and the Luxapalila. Hernando de Soto crossed the Tombigbee River in 1540 into this area. John Pitchlyn had a trading post near here in the 1780's. About 20 pioneers started town in 1816. There was a small trading post called Possum Town. In 1821 the city was organized and named Columbus. There are flat to rolling hills with many lakes and rivers.
