History & History Related Items

Crosby was originally founded under the name of Stephenson, named for a local lumber mill. The vast timber resources of the region made it ideal for lumber operations, and many people settled in the area just prior to the turn of the century. In 1912 a fire swept through the settlement of Stephenson, and wiped out most of the structures in the area. L.O. Crosby, a lumberman from North Mississippi came to the town in 1914 and set up a lumber and sawmill operation. The town rapidly grew and experienced a boom in the early 1920's. At that time, the town was re-incorporated and renamed Crosby. Mr Crosby resided there for many years, building homes and public buildings to serve his employees, and eventually a school in 1944. The school was in operation for many years until it was closed in 1960 due to school consolidation.
