Madison was named for James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. It was in 1856 that the railroad opened its Madison Station, the beginnings of present-day Madison. It was mostly burned during the July, 1861 siege of Jackson. Major General S.D. Lee had his military command in the Madison Station in February 1864
