McComb was founded in 1872. The incorporation came about while the south was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. Elizabeth town, Burglund and Harveytown, small areas of McComb city, all agreed to incorporate as one city to aid in the reconstruction efforts.
The city was named for Henry Simpson McComb, one of the railroad officials of the Jackson and Northern Railroad. The railroad had a new terminal here and many people moved to the area to help staff and run it.
