Ripley Historical Events
Mid 1850's
My Great, Great Grandfather J. (James?) W. Street owned a plantation in, or near, Ripley Mississippi. He was in an artillery brigade and fought through the War Between the States. On the way home after the war, it grew dark about half a days travel from home. He and the men traveling home with him stopped by a river to camp for the night. The next morning all the men went into the river to bathe and they drowned. My Great, Great Grandmother and most of the ex-slaves moved to Texas a short while later, (I believe Taylor, Co.). Most of my family is still in Texas. My Grandmother's name was Allie Street (maiden).
My Grandmother gave me my Great, Great Grandfather's tin Type in his Confederate uniform on my 16th birthday. It was stolen from storage in 1995.
