Location:
in south-central Mississippi, not far from the Gulf Coast of the state. To the north is Jefferson Davis County, Covington County and Jones County. On the east side is Forrest County. To the south is Pearl River County and on the west is Marion County.

History:
When the Mississippi Territory was set aside, it came from a portion of Georgia. Three counties were created rather quickly, Adams and Pickering, both in 1799 and Washington in 1800. All the other counties were made from these initial three. The county was named Lamar when it was created in 1908 in honor of Senator L.Q.C. Lamar of Mississippi.
