December each year
HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS
Friday (2000 date is December 1) is Holly Jolly Christmas, Black Mountain's
9th annual holiday party. On this special night, Black Mountain glows
with luminary-lined streets, twinkling lights, and warm reflections
radiating from shop windows. To say "thank you" to their customers for their
year-long support, local merchants serve hot cider or cocoa, cookies
and sweet breads in their shops, which stay open till 9 p.m. Selections
for holiday gifts are at their best in the shops on this special weekend.
Folks return year after year, as well as first time visitors, to see old and
new friends.
This truly is a memorable evening for the whole family. The evening's entertainment is provided by strolling school children singing favorite holiday tunes, and local choirs stationed throughout town rendering familiar chorals. Santa Claus charms excited children and listens to
their wishes at The Old Depot, a crafts co-op located in the train station.
They'll feel like they're riding "The Polar Express" when the train comes
through town just behind the station.
To enjoy the season before it becomes so hectic, book a room at an
historic old inn or bed and breakfast and stay the weekend. Interrupt your
Saturday, December 2, shopping to join spectators lining State Street to watch
the annual Christmas parade at 4pm. Truly a "small town" event, it brings
out boys and girls, shopkeepers, local club and church floats, scouts,
fire trucks, llamas and horses, and of course the guy with the white beard
himself, Santa.
Other events during the month include Candlelight Christmas at the Inn
at Montreat on December 8; the annual tour of Country Inns on Sunday,
December 17; the circle of lights at Lake Tomahawk on December 9; and Ring in
the Millenium at Montreat, December 29-January 1, 2001.
