Burgaw was named after a group of Indians that resided along a creek in Western Pender County, NC. Burgaw grew from a Wilmington & Weldon Train Depot and was incorporated in 1879. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was known as Cypress Grove before 1854 when all that was here was a small trading post. It was at this time when the post office department in Washington, D.C. began to call it Burgaw Depot. The railroad actually deeded land to the county for the settlement of the town and the building of a new courthouse. Burgaw was incorporated as a town on 25 February 1879.
