Elkin Historical Events

2000, January
Leroy Steven Henry Greenlee is a local black citizen who has been and continues to be a gadfly for change. For more than 25 years Steve Greenlee has led the fight for rights of minorities in schools and local public institutions. More than once, Greenlee has used the political stump to communicate his views and philosophy for change in this small elitist community. In 1990 Greenlee ran for the old 24th legislative district senate seat. Subsequently he has run in 2 non-partisan municipal races for town commissioner and in 1998 Greenlee ran for a seat on the local school board. Greenlee also led protest in march of 1993 and 1994 against the Surry County commissioners allowing the confederate battle flag to be flown on the grounds of the Surry Count Court House.
