Garland, North Carolina Historical Events

I can still remember when we buried my grandmother in 1972 how even strangers pulled their cars off the road, and how people walking stopped and took their hats off, while the funeral procession passed. (Today in Baltimore people practically drive over the living and could care even less about the dead.) I am still touched by that memory.

In the middle of the little shopping strip there was a little square. I vaguely remember a kind of circular area with a metal pole in the center. My mother said that was the slave market. It didn't frighten me, but somehow just seeing it robbed me of a bit of my own humanity. I want to go back there again. Just to stand an bear witness. I remember when the women leader of several governments went to Kosovo during the fighting just to be with those who were suffering. They were doing what Alice Walker(?) called bearing witness. Walker said that although you may not be able to do anything, or change anything, you can bear witness, and tell the story so that people would not have suffered for nothing.
