History & History Related Items Murphy history: Murphy was first known as Huntersville. This was when it began as an Indian trading post. Next, it was known as Huntersville. It changed once more to Huntington before it became Murphy. It was named for Archibald D. Murphey, who was a state senator for the area and also an advocate of education.
