Princeville was settled in 1865 by former slaves. It was called Freedom Hill originally. It was incorporated in 1885. The name was changed to Princeville around 1905 and named for one of the residents, Turner Prince.

Princeville has a mayor, a volunteer fire department and two police officers.
Though the town was nearly ruined, the people didn't give up and are re-building and re-grouping. Many from outside the area have rallied to help Princeville, including prominent figures around the country, such as the Reverent Jesse Jackson. The saving of many of the historic buildings here has begun as well as the re-building of the hundreds of homes which were ruined..
