History & History Related Items Rocky Mount history: A history page for Rocky Mount with pictures and much information including a list of former mayors of Rocky Mount The first post office here was opened at the Falls of the Tar River on 22 March 1816. It is believed the name for Rocky Mount came from the rocky mound at the falls of the Tar River. This is the same spot as the site of one of the first cotton mills in the state. The mills were established in 1818. When the Wilmington-Weldon Railroad came through in 1845 it was the means for connection of Rocky Mount to other areas. By the turn of the 20th century, Rocky Mount's population had climbed to about 3,000 residents.
