Economy & Industry
In 1998, Selma undertook a revitalization program to change its downtown area into a viable center of
commerce once again. What was a small, dying downtown has been changed into a first-rate antique center
of some renown. In 1998, there were fifteen closed, boarded builings and today there are over twenty antique stores with a growing reputation. The close (1/2 mile) proximity to I-95 has certainly helped in this regard. Selma, once again, has become a destination and on the weekends it's difficult to find a parking space in the "Uptown Selma" area. It is truly an example of what can be done when the entire population and city government work together to affect change.
