History:
County established January, 1771 made from parts of Orange and Rowan Counties. Its boundaries were larger at its inception than the current county boundaries. It was first diminished in 1779 and then again six years later when the present boundaries were set. It was named for Francis North, the first Earl of Guilford, whose son, Frederick, was Prime Minister of Great Britain at this time. The first county seat was set in 1775 at Martindale. The present county seat of Greensboro was set in 1808 when the center of the county was deemed to be in the middle of marsh land. The city was then slated to be set up six miles from that place and named Greensboro in honor of General Nathanael Greene, Revolutionary War hero and commander of the colonial troops at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
