History & History Related Items Sentinel Butte history: The name of the town, according to my Grandma Zinsli, came from the Butte 2 miles south of town. The "Sentinels" would post on top of the butte and watch for the Indians. The old school is now torn down. It had a lot of history about it, but to leave it up could have caused an accident at some future point as it was getting too old to stand on its own. Sentinel Butte attractions: Sentinel Butte Dam Is a nice, quiet and romantic attraction in the summer time and is a lot of fun to ice skate on in the winter time. The old school hall is a unique building in itself. It holds the city's annual taco feed and dance every year which brings many people from neighboring towns and families from relatives from all over. Sentinel Butte also publishes its own newspaper, "The Sentinel Butte News." If you ever visit Sentinel Butte, you'll have to be sure to check out "Gravity Hill." If you put your car in neutral and look back, your car will roll UP the hill behind you away from the butte. Legend has it that an Indian spirit will push your car away from the butte, the guess is that the butte still belongs to the Indians! Sentinel Butte is a wonderful place to raise children also.
