The Danish Land and Homestead Company President, Lars Hannibal, sent out a small committee to locate land for Danish settlers to live on. They found what they felt was suitable land about a day's ride from the Platte River. Once they secured the land, the families began to arrive with the first ones coming in late Spring of 1871. The new town desired a new post office and applied for one in 1872. The name suggested for the town was Carthage, but the first postmaster, Lars Hannibal, said no to that suggestion. He wanted the name of Dannebrog for the Danish Flag which stands for beauty, goodwill, love, peace and God-given ideals.
