When Gering was founded on 27 April 1887, it was known as Vendome rather than Gering. It wasn't long after the founding that the name was changed to Gering for the city's first banker, Martin Gering. Even though the railroad took more time to arrive in town than expected, Gering was named the county seat of Scotts Bluff County in 1888. The area is rich in the pioneer migration of the west.
