1942, January 16
On January 16, 1942, I arrived at the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) camp near Halsey. I was a 15 year old boy from Dyess Colony later changed to Dyess, Arkansas. I worked as field labor. We built fences for the young forest. The ground was frozen so we had a hard time digging post holes. At noontime, the truck would bring us a hot meal in big containers and serve us a good warm meal. Even though there was 18 inches of snow on the ground, the only time we could smoke was at noon and under the watchful eyes of our leaders because they said the grass could catch fire. I had never seen any sand hills before. I came from flat land so this was interesting to me. I have always wondered what the forest is like now, did they cut the trees or just let them grow to keep the land from blowing away.
