History & History Related Items Niobrara history: Niobrara was named by the local Ponca Tribe. The name means running water. Dr. Benneville Yeakel Shelly led a group of settlers to what would become Niobrara. It was founded on 7 June 1856. They built a garrison on the river and called the company, "L'Eau Qui Court Company." Later, it was called the Niobrara Township Company. Later it was shortened to just Niobrara. The town was flooded during the spring thaw in March, 1881 and had to be moved. It was the county seat until 1902. In 1973 with more flooding and silt deposits, the town was again moved to higher ground as was the Niobrara Island State Park. The Lewis and Clark expedition camped here on 4 September 1804 and the Mormon pioneers wintered here in 1846 as guests of the local Ponca Indians. A cemetery marked by the Mormon Monument is just west of town and includes the gravesites of a small number of the party including church leader, Newell Knight.
