Potter was named after General Joseph S. Potter, the Union Pacific Railroad Directory. The Union Pacific Railroad had built a station house here in 1870. The Station House also was the post office, schoolhouse and land development office. Potter is one of Western Nebraska oldest communities.

1998, 10 MarchOdyssey of the Mind
In March 10 teams from this rural K-12 school, Potter-Dix Public School, competed at the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition in Scottsbluff, Ne. Nine of these teams won first or second place and went on to compete at the state level of competition in Kearny Ne. in April. Of the 14 teams winning Sate competitions SIX are from our school! WOW! Way to go Omers!!! World competition, held in Orlando Fl., in May was a tougher competition and Nebraska was well represented with one team even placing as high as 4th. Way to go Huskers!
