History & History Related Items Bordentown history: history page for Bordentown. Bordentown was settled in 1682. It was named for Joseph Borden, who arrived here in 1717. He established a line of stage coaches and boats between New York and Philadelphia. Also from this area were Thomas Paine, Joseph Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and former king of Spain) and Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross.
