Though the city was planned just before the Civil War and incorporated in 1858, it began much earlier. Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, from Holland, sailed along the New Jersey Coast. He came into the mouths of two rivers in 1614 and was surprised to find many eggs piled on the river banks. He then named the area "Eyren Haven" which means The Harbor of Eggs in Dutch.
