History & History Related Items Elizabeth history: A group of Englishmen known as the Elizabethtown Associates, purchased land in this area in 1664, including the area that would later become Elizabeth. Elizabethtown was formed in 1665 and named for the wife of Sir George Carteret. It actually became the first capital of New Jersey. Elizabethtown became a chartered city on on 13 March 1855.
