Merchantville was created as a borough from portions of Delaware and Stockton townships on 3 March 1874. It was incorporated on 18 May 1874. Later, in 1914, when studies for the Benjamin Franklin Bridge began, the area again began a growth period. The brige opened in 1926 and the borough again had a growth spurt. Merchantville has many Victorian homes, including the Cattell Tract and The Oaks which are listed in both state and national historic registers.
