Wenonah grew out of a resort community that was founded in 1872, carved from the surrounding Deptford area. It was later the location of a junior-high and high-school level military academy, until the late 1930s. Wenonah is noted for old-fashioned Independence Day celebrations that have occurred since the 1870s.
