Artesia was named for its underground water supply. Many artesian wells pumped the water to the surface. Nearby farmland is watered by these wells. Oil was also discovered here in 1923. Since natural gas was already found in the area, the new discovery helped Artesia's economy to grow rapidly.
An interesting fact about Artesia is the first underground school in the country. It was built to protect 500 students and about 2,000 others in the event of a nuclear disaster.
