Belen elevation is 4,800 feet above sea level. Return to Index Belen location: in central New Mexico in the Albuquerque general area. It is about 32 miles south of Albuquerque. Rio Communities is three miles east and Tierra Grande is seven miles southeast. It is about ten miles south of Los Lunas.

The weather in Belen is almost perfect! The sun is shining nearly 80% of the time during the day. The lows at night in the winter dip down to the low 20's while the winter daytime highs range in the low 50's. During the summer the daytime average is around 95 during the day with average lows in the 60's at night History & History Related Items Belen history: Belen was founded in 1740 by Captain Don Diego de Torres and his brother-in-law, Antonio Salazar. The name is the Spanish word for Bethlehem. Prior to the 1800's, the area had was mainly agricultural in its economy. Around this time, sheep were introduced and the town and area began to grow. The railroad came here in 1880 which brought more business and growth. The village was officially founded in 1918. The town was incorporated in 1940 and the city in 1966.
