Fort Sumner Community Events
Old Fort Days
2nd weekend in June
It includes some local rodeo events, a living history exhibit at the (partially) restored
Fort Sumner which includes authentic 19th century uniforms and weapon
demonstrations. There are flea markets, art exhibits, and Billy the Kid's
grave site. Yes, he is dead. There are also spectator participation events
including a tug-o-war and the famous tombstone race. The tombstone race
simulates the actual "course" necessary to steal Billy the Kid's tombstone
as it used to be taken quite frequently. The race has barriers and a real
tombstone to be transported. The race is fun and pays $ 1000 to the winner!
Much fun is to be had and friends to be made. If it gets too hot, Sumner
Lake is just 15 minutes north.
See you there!
