This area has a strong family heritage. Domingo de LUna came here in 1692 after receiving a land grant. Another prominant family, headed by Don Pedro Otero also came to the area with a land grant. Both families were involved in the area's economy, politics and society. The families were united in marriage in the late 1800's. When the Santa Fe Railroad wanted a right-of-way in 1880, the Luna family approved the grant if the railraod built them a new home. The mansion built for Don Antonio Jose has become a prominent landmark in the area. Both the Otero family and the Luna family have remained in the area.
Los Lunas, in spanish, means, where the Lunas live. The community was named for this early family. This page tells more about the history of Los Lunas, including a number of pictures.

This area is great for birdwatchers. Among the varieties seen here are many types of ducks, both wild and tame, which live here in the spring and summer and raise their young. Also seen here in large numbers are Canadian geese, snow geese, Whooping Cranes and Sand Hill Cranes.
Petroglyphs are seen in many places here. Though many are on nearby private lands, some may be seen at the Laguna Indian Reservation west of Los Lunas.
