Tome-Adelino Historical Events
1846, September 8
On September 8, 1846 General Stephen W. Kearny arrived in Tome with approx. 600 troops to inquire about a possible counter offensive by Governor Manuel Armijo who had left Santa Fe and gone to his family home in Lemitar, NM. He did not find the governor, but it was the eve of the Tome Fiestas and being an Episcopilian he worshiped with the townspeople.
He appointd Jesus Sanchez as area administrator and returned back to Santa Fe. A children/s book entitled: The Americans are Coming uses this historical incident to tell a fiction narrative of this event. It is available in La Tiendita at the NM Cultural-Historical Museum in Albuquerque.
