Tucumcari is near 4,999 foot high Tucumcari mountain which the Comanches used for a lookout point. The name for a lookout point is tucumcari. There is also another story as to how the town got its name. This story is more romantic than the first. It is said that an Apache warrior, Tocom and Kari, an Apache chief's daughter were in love. There was a fight for her hand in which Tocom was killed. In despair, Kari stabbed the victor and then herself. Then her father, distraut at the death of his daughter, stabbed himself to death while calling out Tocum-Kari.
