Wagon Mound is a small town just off interstate 25 in
northeastern New Mexico. There is a small butte next to the
town that a looks like a wagon and is responsible for the
name of the town. There is a legend that says that an
Indian chief buried a treasure before he died on which he put a
curse. Everyone moved out once the curse set in and the
town went from 5000 to 300 people. This legend was told by a
man who had been in the town for generations. The town was known as Santa Clara before the name was changed to Wagon Mound.
