History & History Related Items Ely history: Ely began in 1868 as a silver mining camp, but gained its popularity in 1907 with its copper mining operations. The naming of Ely has several versions. Some believe that J.W. Long, who moved a post office here, named it after his home town of Ely, Vermont. Others say John Ely, one of the owners of the Raymond and Ely Mine in the Pioche area put forth the name. Still others, feel the president of the Shelby Copper MIning and Smelting Company, Smith Ely, was the source. He founded the company here in 1887. No one really seems to know the actual source of the name for Ely. Today gold and silver are both still mined in Ely. It is the county seat of White Pine County. Because it is surrounded by mountains, there are many recreational possibilities in the area. Ely attractions: Nevada Northern Railway Museum.
